Automatic traffic counts and ATC surveys.
ATC survey specification and commissioning for classified traffic flows, daily patterns and speed data where the site and equipment are suitable.
An automatic counter can show how a road operates across the day and week. The useful dataset depends on the location, equipment, classification and survey duration agreed at the outset.
Specify the output before selecting equipment
We establish the required directions, intervals, vehicle categories and speed measures. Pneumatic tubes, radar or other equipment may be considered by the specialist contractor according to site conditions and the brief.
An ATC is not a junction turning count. It records traffic passing the count location; extra work is needed to establish where vehicles turn or which route they take.
Select a representative location and period
We review junction proximity, queuing, road geometry and installation constraints with the contractor. A location convenient for installation may not represent free flowing approach speeds or the road link needed by another consultant.
A week of collection is often useful for day to day patterns, but the duration is agreed for the task. Disruption, seasonal demand or equipment failure may require a different approach.
Check the dataset and any conversion
We review daily totals, directional balance, classifications and missing periods. Speed analysis should explain the sample and whether it represents the conditions relevant to the design.
A survey week average is not automatically Annual Average Daily Traffic. Any annualisation or forecasting needs suitable factors and documented assumptions.
Your brief and our fee
Send the proposed count location, purpose, reporting periods, vehicle classes and deadline. We will seek contractor quotations and identify any permissions, access or installation dependencies.
We confirm the deliverables, information needed, programme and fee before starting. Survey costs, third party charges and additional design or consultation are identified in the scope. We do not promise a council decision date or an approval.
