Traffic surveys and transport data.
Survey specification, commissioning and data checks for planning applications, transport modelling and environmental assessments.
Before commissioning a count, decide what the evidence needs to answer. We help clients and their consultants specify the survey, obtain specialist quotations, coordinate collection and check that the returned data can be used.
Choose the survey for the decision
An access design may need approach speeds. A junction model needs turning flows and queues. A parking objection needs occupancy and usable capacity. Noise and air quality assessments can require daily flows, classification and different time periods.
We review existing authority or published data first where useful. An available dataset is only suitable if its location, date, classification and coverage fit the task.
The surveys we can help commission
We prepare a brief around the project and liaise with specialist survey contractors. Availability, site access, permissions, equipment and safe installation affect the method and programme.
- Automatic traffic counts: flows, classification and speeds where suitable
- Junction turning counts and queue observations
- Parking occupancy, duration and accumulation surveys
- Pedestrian, cycle and crossing movement counts
- Journey time and origin and destination studies
- Delivery, servicing and travel questionnaire surveys
Timing, quality and usable outputs
We agree locations, periods, vehicle categories and reporting formats before requesting quotations. Representative conditions are important; holidays, roadworks, diversions, events and weather need consideration. Seasonal businesses may need surveys of their particular peak.
We review coverage, missing intervals, unusual results and consistency between sites. Where adjustment or repeat collection is needed, we explain the reason. We do not describe a short count as annual data without an evidenced conversion.
Your brief and our fee
Send the site, report purpose, council comments, deadline and any existing data. Tell us which consultants will use the results. We will define the survey brief, contractor costs and our coordination or analysis scope.
We confirm the deliverables, information needed, programme and fee before starting. Survey costs, third party charges and additional design or consultation are identified in the scope. We do not promise a council decision date or an approval.
