Junction turning counts and queue surveys.
Classified turning counts and queue survey briefs for junction modelling, planning applications and access assessments.
A traffic total on the main road does not show how a junction operates. Turning counts identify the movements that compete for capacity, while queue observations help explain the conditions on the ground.
Define the junction and study periods
We establish the arms, movements, vehicle classes and relevant peaks, including development specific periods. Nearby junctions may need coordinated counts to create a consistent dataset.
The brief specifies whether pedestrian movements, cycles, crossings, buses or unusual manoeuvres need recording. An isolated commuter peak may not answer a school or leisure proposal.
Count queues in a way the model can use
We agree the definition of a queue, observation intervals and the approach sections to cover. Queue length, blocking back and spillover can be important where junctions interact.
A maximum queue and an average queue are different outputs. The reporting method must be explicit, and the interpretation should recognise what the survey could observe.
From observations to assessment
Specialist contractors may use video or manual methods according to the location and coverage required. We coordinate the brief and review the returned tables, unusual movements and consistency with other counts.
The count supplies evidence for modelling; it is not itself a prediction of development traffic or a capacity conclusion. Those assessment tasks are scoped separately.
Your brief and our fee
Send the junction locations, layout information, proposed development, council requirements and modelling purpose. We will define the movements, periods and queue outputs needed before commissioning.
We confirm the deliverables, information needed, programme and fee before starting. Survey costs, third party charges and additional design or consultation are identified in the scope. We do not promise a council decision date or an approval.
